Community members (male adults) participating in the meeting responded positively to AIF’s proposal to work in Welcome Colony on development issues, especially among the youth. The need to counsel parents of youth was raised as a first step towards working with young women.
Training material regarding SHG Concept: Relevant training material on SHG was identified by AIF through literature survey on the internet. The conceptual material relating to SHG available in the research paper titled, ‘Role of self help groups in the empowerment of women in Chennai city Tamil Nadu’, by P. Sritharan was selected as training guide for conducting a first level SHG training of young women of Welcome Colony (Training material in Annexure-1). Several videos available on You Tube in Hindi and English on SHG were also identified for dissemination to training participants.
Training meeting on SHG concepts: The SHG training meeting was held on 08-07-2019. 13 young women(secondary school going girls and girls doing their graduation) participated in the training meeting. Prior to the training, a WhatsApp group of prospective self-help group members was created and educational videos relating to SHG from the internet were shared with them. The training was conducted in the group learning mode, with the AIF Director facilitating group discussion on SHG based on learning material ready shared with them. The AIF Director then took the participants through the SHG concept and answered queries of the participants and evaluated their learning at the end of the training.
Outcome of the Training: All training participants showed interest in forming an SHG group. An SHG register with their names is now maintained. The register also records meetings held by the SHG members.
Formation of SHG Group: 25 training participants showed interest to form a Self-Help-Group. The group members agreed on a small amount that each member would save with the self-help group every month. Given some group members know tailoring, it was decided to start an economic activity viz. imparting training to Welcome Colony girls in stitching girl’s salwar-kameez at nominal fee of RS 200. A space would be hired by the SHG to carry out this activity. These ideas are yet to take shape. But, group members are constantly working to successfully initiate the SHG activity in Welcome Colony. Ms. Heena has been elected as the President of SHG and Ms. Mahrukh, the Secretary of SHG.
Future Plans: The plan is to develop this SHG group as model SHG group in the area. Over the long run, the SHG group with be linked to relative bank and government schemes for SHG. The SHG youth will also be community volunteers for linking girls from the community with NGO/Government Schemes.
