The SHG training and motivational meetings helped Sania, a 12th pass student continue with her studies. Her parents had made up their minds that Sania would not study after class 12. They wanted her to stay at home and take care of the house work and learn tailoring. Most of the girls in the resettlement colony of Welcome discontinue studies after class 12 due to family and community pressure.
Sania had expressed her dream of becoming a lawyer in one of AIF’s initial meetings. Thereafter, AIF decided to help her realize her dream. Her mother attended one of the motivational meetings. She began to change her thinking regarding the importance of girls’ education, but felt helpless because Sania’s father and brother were the ones who had to be convinced and she had no influence over them. AIF then met with Sania’s brother and also interacted with her father. Eventually, they agreed to Sania taking admission in law College.
But the family is very poor. Her father is a vehicle puncture repair mechanic and her mother is a housewife. She has two other siblings. Sania secured admission in Royal College of Law, Meerut. Some people came forward to pay Sania’s admission fee. Sania is attending classes regularly and is working hard. She is extremely happy that her dream has been fulfilled. The challenge ahead for AIF is raising College fee every year for Sania for the next four years. Sania has become a role model in her community. AIF is hopeful that more girls will continue with their studies after class12 and pursue careers of their choice.
A visitor to AIF from America, Dr. Gaurav Malhotra was very pleased to interact with Sania and motivate her (Picture below). A newspaper, ‘Loktantra Ka Paya’ also carried a story on Sania’s success. A clipping of the same is provided below:
